Italian, ca. 19th c.
What a treat to have this fine, small instrument in the shop! A composite Italian bass that we're categorizing as a 1/2 size with 37" string length. We attribute the spruce top of this instrument to the Storioni School ca. 1770's and believe that it was cut down from a larger cornerless model. The back and ribs were beautifully built at a later time, probably ca. 1850, and are made of fruitwood.
This instrument was imported to the United States by Anton Torello of the Philadelphia Orchestra, passed on to Jacques Posell of the Cleveland Orchestra, and to the current owner for the last 50 years.
