Jeffery Gilbert, 1902
Jeffery Gilbert (1850-1942) was born in New Romney, England and began the instrument-making trade under his father. By 1875 he had relocated to Petersborough and won a silver medal at London in 1884, another in 1885, and a gold medal at Edinburgh in 1890. His primary output were violins and violas, but of 330 instruments made, this instrument was no. 172 and possibly his only double bass.
This 5/8 size bass made in England by Jeffery Gilbert in 1902, and is labeled Jeffery J. Gilbert. Peterborough Fecit. Anno MDCCCCII and inscribed J.J. Gilbert, Peterborough 1902. It is of modest proportions, but features a fine-grain spruce top, a beautifully-flamed maple roundback, matching maple ribs, and a flamed maple neck/scroll. The varnish is a reddish-brown and is original to the instrument. It carries ebony fittings, an adjustable maple bridge, and single-plate engraved tuning machines with ivory handles. This instrument is in good condition and offers a BIG sound for a small instrument.
