Joseph Arthur Vigneron, c.1890

Joseph Arthur Vigneron (1851-1905) was born in Mirecourt, France and completed an apprenticeship in the shop of his stepfather, Claude Husson. He subsequently worked for Jean Joseph Martin and in 1880 he moved to Paris to work for the Gand & Bernadel firm. In 1888, Vigneron opened his own shop, where he continued to refine his bows, with great focus on modernization and playing qualities. He died in Paris in 1905.
 
This particular bow was crafted in Paris c.1890 and is branded A. VIGNERON A PARIS. It features a lovely elliptical pernambuco stick, with silver winding and black leather grip. The frog is ebony fully mounted in silver, with pearl slide, Parisian eyes, and silver button. It also carries notable provenance, previously owned and played by Anton Torello (Philadelphia Orchestra), Carl Torello (Philadelphia Orchestra), John Schaeffer (New York Philharmonic) and Thomas Martin (London Symphony Orchestra).
