Paul Claudot, ca. 1850
A 7/8 size double bass made ca. 1850s by Paul Claudot, branded internally and externally. This gorgeous bass features top quality woods, including a fine, straight-grain spruce top, tightly flamed maple flatback, ribs, and the original scroll. Varnish is original, and the bass carries ebony fittings, a brand new adjustable maple bridge, and German single plate tuning machines. Claudot basses are known for their powerful and complex tonal characteristics, often rivaling instruments twice the price.
This particular bass is priced at just $29,500 to accommodate some needed improvements. Our professional recommendations would include a scroll graft for shorter string length and improved geometry, a new fingerboard, new tuning machines, and some cosmetic work. Once this work is completed, we think you will have a first class French bass on your hands and a fair amount of equity as well!
Not bothered by a long string length? This beauty is absolutely playable AS IS!
